Is the poor ROI of drinking messing with your mind?

Is the poor ROI of drinking messing with your mind? Many people underestimate the hidden costs of booze, which extend far beyond the price of a drink. And when drinking takes more than it gives, it’s time to take a closer look at what’s going on for us.

  • A night out may promise fun and relaxation, but the aftermath brings feelings of regret, anxiety, and diminished mental clarity.
  • A glass of wine after work might promise lower stress and a low hassle way to unwind, but one leads to another, and another, and the next thing you know…
  • Good intentions set in the morning may fade by lunchtime, and vanish altogether when you decide to round the day off with drinks.

There are many hidden (and not so hidden) costs of drinking, and this poor return on investment (ROI) can wreak havoc on our mental well-being. Additionally, the amount we drink can be exacerbated by our neurodivergence, and drinking in turn can exacerbate the traits of our neurodivergence.

The emotional toll can be significant. Instead of enhancing our lives, drinking can become a barrier to achieving our goals and living authentically.

And when we add neurodivergence into the mix, changing our drinking can bring a unique set of extra challenges.

What begins as fun often turns into a fog, with intentions feeling insurmountable and de-stressing transforming into distress when we drink beyond our limits. The cycle of drinking can also lead to increased anxiety and depression, trapping us in a downward spiral.

While alcohol may offer temporary relief or fleeting joy, the long-term effects can be debilitating. Hangovers cloud our judgment, sap our motivation, and hinder productivity, resulting in spirals of shame, guilt, and self-sabotage. This leaves us questioning our choices and undermines our mental clarity and overall well-being.

However, change is always possible, wherever you are right now, and whether you’ve tried before or not.

How neurodivergence can impact our ROI from drinking

Understanding the relationship between neurodivergent identities—such as ADHD, autism, and dyslexia—and various aspects of life, including drinking, offers valuable insights into our unique experiences of the world.

Sensitivity to substances

Neurodivergence can bring heightened sensitivity to substances, including alcohol. This sensitivity can lead to more pronounced negative effects, such as anxiety, mood swings, and cognitive impairment, ultimately contributing to a poor ROI from drinking.

Sensory sensitivities

Neurodivergent people often have heightened sensory sensitivities. Alcohol can amplify these sensitivities, leading to increased discomfort, anxiety, or irritability during and after drinking.

Coping mechanisms

Many neurodivergent people use alcohol as a coping mechanism to manage overwhelming emotions, social anxiety, or sensory overload. However, while it may provide temporary relief, the aftermath often exacerbates mental health challenges, reinforcing feelings of regret and dissatisfaction.

Executive functioning

Conditions like ADHD can affect executive functioning, leading to impulsivity and difficulties in decision-making. This can make it harder for us to assess the true costs and benefits of drinking, leading to choices that may negatively impact our mental health.

Social interactions

As neurodivergent people, we often navigate social situations differently, and alcohol might seem like a social lubricant. However, it can impair communication and lead to misunderstandings, resulting in further anxiety or isolation.

Authenticity, identity and masking

For many neurodivergent people, alcohol can create a disconnect between our authentic selves and the personas we project when drinking. This misalignment can lead to feelings of inadequacy and a sense of losing control over one’s identity.

All of that is bound to mess with your mind!

Reflecting on the true ROI of drinking is crucial. Understanding the relationship between our neurodivergence and drinking is key to developing healthier coping strategies and enhancing our overall well-being.

By recognising the unique challenges we face as neurodivergent individuals, we can make more informed choices and empower ourselves to reclaim our mental clarity and joy in life.
